After character creation, all hell breaks loose as ancient black dragon, Alduin, swoops in and begins burning the town of Helgen to the ground. Watching as their fellow prisoners hop off the carriage and march to their execution, the player takes a moment to build their character when the Imperial Guardsman, Hadvar, asks who they are. Picked up with the rebels and tagged as one of them, the character doesn't even know who they are or less how they got there - and the future doesn't look promising once they arrive. Awakening aboard a moving carriage with a wagonload of captured Stormcloaks, including their leader, Jarl Ulfric Stormcloak, the peaceful ride to the player's potential execution doesn't shed much light on what's happening. The Elder Scrolls franchise is known for starting its player characters out as prisoners, and Skyrim is no different.
